If you need a ladder for a particular task, you might want to know more about ladders in general. This may help in your choosing the right ladder for the job. For many tasks, the rigid ladder is the type often used. There are many kinds of rigid ladders, from the fixed type to the roof ladder type. The fixed ladder is the most basic, and has no moving parts. Extension ladders are composed of two ladders where one nests in the other for easy storage. Step ladders are always joined by a hinge at the top of its inverted V form. A platform step ladder has, because of its name, a platform at the top. If you must climb up the roof or do some outdoor house painting, you need a roof ladder, which has a hook at the top, for easy latching on the roof. The preferred material for most ladders, except those used in electrical work is aluminium.
