People often don’t realize that they can make their office environment less stressful each day. Focusing on deadlines and keeping customers satisfied are the main objectives of the day. But, people don’t stop to think that while working day after day, they need to try to have the most ergonomic office possible.
1. Invest in office chairs that are adjustable. The increasingly popular ergonomic chairs have many adjustable features such as arm rests, height and back support. The ability to make these changes with ergonomic office chairs will bring more comfortable working conditions to the workers.
2. Make sure there is enough back support. This should take care of itself with an ergonomic office chair so that each person’s back has enough support throughout the day. The back will become very weak, tense and painful without proper support.
3. Take mini-breaks during the day. It may be helpful for each worker to set a timer so they will remember to move every hour or so. Every so often, positions should be changed by moving around. Taking a break, even if it’s only for a few minutes to grab a snack or drink, can help relieve stress and make the day go faster.
4. Eyes should be level with the top of the computer screen. Undue stress will be put on the shoulders, back and neck if the head is tilted up, down or sideways. Keeping the computer screen level with the eyes, however, can prevent this problem.
5. Make sure that there is no glare on the monitor. A strong glare on a computer screen can cause eye strain. Glare can be avoided by moving furniture around.
6. Feet should always touch the floor. If the feet don’t touch the floor, the worker’s back and legs need a footstool. Investing in adjustable foot stools and ergonomic furniture can give each worker the ability to make the proper adjustments.
7. During the day, make it a practice to do some small exercises. Mini-breaks can include some stretches, knee bends, and walks. Every worker should get the circulation moving and stretch the muscles so they will be able to be more comfortable as they work.
8. The temperature at the office should be as comfortable as possible, based on the weather outside. In most offices, employees will not have the privilege of controlling the temperature, so each one needs to be prepared. For extra chilly days, an extra layer of clothing may be necessary. If it tends to get too warm, a small fan near the desk can cool things off. Proper hydration can be achieved by drinking cool or warm drinks throughout the day, which will result in less fatigue and healthier bodies.
9. Workers can avoid reaching and twisting when they place items in the right places on their desks. Keep staplers, tape, paper clips and other important office supplies close by so can reach them easily. If a worker constantly needs one or two folders, consider placing the file cabinet closer or having a place near their desk where they can organize files and have them handy as needed. Each worker should keep the items they need close by so they can save themselves from reaching and turning.
10. Practice stress reducing techniques. Everyone has bad days when they would like to throw in the towel and go home. This is not practical, however, and each person needs to learn how to manage their emotions throughout the day. Conflict can result from dealing with people day after day. Employers can help their workers have a plan on how to deal with office conflict and stress when it does come. Eating a healthy diet, taking short walks, keeping a journal and confiding in a friend are all simple ways to reduce stress.
It’s not difficult to have a healthy office, but it take some extra thought. Most of these things can be taken care of with little cost, but a little time and effort are required. Taking the time to have proper office equipment, keeping everyone healthy and arranging workstations will all help to make work easier and lighten the burden on each person.
